the unbelievable tale of a soldier’s escape in the burmese jungle

imagine a story so epic, it sounds like a hollywood movie. but this tale is real, and it’s about a soldier who escaped death and became the king of the jungle. let’s dive into the insane true story of private herman perry, who went awol after an accidental shooting that killed his sergeant and sent him on the run.

during world war ii, the us army segregated its forces, and african americans were often assigned to menial tasks. private herman perry, a young african american soldier, found himself in the burmese jungle, serving with the 849th engineer aviation battalion. on march 5, 1944, perry was in a heated argument with lieutenant cady, who was trying to take him into custody. perry, who was probably coming off an opium high, was losing it. he wasn’t going to let cady take him back to the ledo stockade, a parasite-infested hellhole.

despite perry’s erratic behavior, cady wasn’t about to back off. this boy had a smart mouth, he had been awol, and he was a troublemaker. he needed to be punished. but there was no way that perry would shoot–that would be suicidal. however, as cady stretched out a hand towards perry, the young soldier pulled the trigger. cady jerked and crumpled to the ground, fatally wounded. perry swung his gun around and trained it on the other officers as he backed away down the road. as he neared the trees, he turned and ran, vanishing into the brush.

perry’s story doesn’t end there. in his search for shelter, he befriended a local tribe, fell in love with the daughter of their leader, and became part of the tribe family. all the while, he was being hunted by the military so he could answer for his crimes. this story is so crazy, you can’t miss it!
